Dermatitis is a general term for skin inflammation. It is not a single disease but a condition with many causes and forms, all of which result in a red, itchy rash. The skin may also become swollen, blistered, dry, cracked, and thickened.
The most common types include:
• Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema): A chronic, often inherited form linked to allergies and asthma. It involves dry, extremely itchy skin and is common in children.
• Contact Dermatitis: Occurs when the skin reacts to something it touches. It has two main types:
· Irritant: Caused by harsh chemicals or substances that damage the skin (e.g., detergents, solvents).
· Allergic: An immune system reaction to a substance like poison ivy, nickel, or fragrances.
• Seborrheic Dermatitis: Causes red, scaly patches and stubborn dandruff, often on the scalp, face, and chest.
• Diaper Dermatitis: It appears as a red, inflamed rash on the buttocks, thighs, genitals, and abdomen—the areas in direct contact with the diaper. The skin folds are often less affected.

Management depends on type of dermatitis.
The symptoms can be effectively managed with moisturizers, barrier cream, corticosteroid creams, identifying and avoiding triggers, and medications to reduce itching and inflammation depending on the type of dermatitis.
