Conjunctivitis

Commonly known as pink eye, conjunctivitis is an inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva—the thin, clear tissue that lines the inside of the eyelid and covers the white part of the eyeball.

Key Symptoms: The most common symptoms include:

· Redness in one or both eyes

· A gritty or itchy feeling

· A discharge that forms a crust during sleep, potentially sealing the eye shut

· Tearing or watery eyes

Main Types & Causes: There are three primary types, each with a different cause:

1. Viral: Caused by a virus (like the common cold). It is highly contagious but usually clears up on its own.

2. Bacterial: Caused by bacteria. It often produces a thick, yellow-green discharge and may require antibiotic eye drops.

3. Allergic: Caused by allergens like pollen or pet dander. It affects both eyes and is usually accompanied by itching and tearing. It is not contagious.

Key Management Tips

Treatment depends on the cause:

· Viral: Typically resolves on its own; cool compresses and artificial tears can soothe symptoms.

· Bacterial: Treated with antibiotic eye drops or ointment.

· Allergic: Treated with antihistamine eye drops and avoiding the allergen.

Good hygiene, especially frequent handwashing, is crucial to prevent the spread of contagious forms of pink eye.
