Acne is one of the most common skin conditions, affecting people of all ages. It occurs when hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. This can lead to whiteheads, blackheads, and pimples (often called "zits" or "breakouts"). While most common in teenagers due to hormonal changes, acne can persist into or even start in adulthood.
What Causes Acne?
Three main factors contribute to acne:
1. Excess Oil (Sebum) Production: Hormones stimulate glands in your skin to produce too much oil.
2. Clogged Hair Follicles: Oil and dead skin cells plug the pores.
3. Bacteria: A specific type of bacteria (C. acnes) can thrive in the clogged follicle, causing inflammation and red, painful pimples.
Other factors like genetics, stress, certain medications, and some cosmetics can also play a role. Contrary to popular myth, foods like chocolate and greasy fries have not been proven to be a primary cause of acne for most people, though some individuals may find certain foods (like dairy or high-sugar foods) can trigger their breakouts.
· Be Gentle: Wash your face no more than twice a day and after sweating. Use a mild, non-abrasive cleanser and lukewarm water. Avoid harsh scrubbing, which can irritate the skin and worsen acne.
· Moisturize: Use a non-comedogenic (won't clog pores) moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated.
· Hands Off: Avoid touching your face, picking, or popping pimples. This can lead to worse inflammation, scarring, and infection.
· Makeup & Sunscreen: Choose oil-free, non-comedogenic products.
· Patience is Key: Acne treatments take time—often 4 to 8 weeks—to show significant improvement. Consistency is crucial.
